Automotive tune-ups

An automotive tune-up involves a comprehensive assessment of a vehicle's engine to determine what improvements can be made to improve the performance/prolong the vehicle's life.

What is a tune-up?

The term "tune-up" has drastically changed since the phrase was coined during the dawn of automobiles. For over 50 years, a tune-up meant that the vehicle's ignition system – breaker points and condenser, were replaced and adjusted. In addition, a new distributor cap, rotor, and spark plugs were installed, ignition timing was set, and the vehicle's carburetor was adjusted and "tuned" for optimal performance.

With vehicles of old, this was a regular occurrence. As electronic ignition replaced points-style systems, the need was still there for plugs, caps, rotors, and carb adjustments. Ultimately, even that became extinct once DIS (distributorless) ignition systems and computer-based fuel injection became the norm. Today, the vehicle's engine computer and engine components constantly keep these systems running right where they should.

The importance of a quality tune-up service

Your brakes, tires, battery, and other automotive components, require routine inspections and monitoring to prevent possible risks. Additionally, regular wear and tear over the years make your vehicle parts more susceptible to breakdowns.

We believe it's essential to perform tune-up services to replace any vehicle parts that are worn or rusting and correct any malfunctioning components. With our quality tune-up service, we'll be able to notify you of any potential problems that we see, along with a recommended course of action.

Drivers are often unaware of existing problems as well as potential issues with their vehicles. By the time they notice anything, it's already too late. When a car is brought into our shop for a tune-up service, we aim to prevent automobile owners from unnecessarily spending money on repairs and fix any issue before it becomes a repair need.

What's included in a tune-up?

Every car has parts that wear out with usage. Therefore, an automotive tune-up is carried out on your car to replace and maintain worn-out components.

All cars need regular tune-ups about every 30,000 miles or 48,000 kilometers.

There are many variations on what should be done at a tune-up, but these services typically include the following:

  • air filter replacement
  • fuel filter replacement
  • new spark plugs and wires
  • distributor cap examination and replacement, if required
  • rotor inspection and replacement
  • valve adjustment
  • throttle plate cleaning
  • fluid check
  • clutch adjustment
  • battery inspection

Check Engine Light

Myths

The check engine light means your car is begging for a tune-up.

Facts

The check engine light could indicate several problems. For example, when the check engine light comes on, the internal computer finds something wrong with one of the many components in the engine.

Emissions Test

Myths

Failing an emissions test means your car needs a tune-up.

Facts

Emissions problems are often associated with the oxygen sensor.

Car Maintenance

Myths

Maintenance is the same thing as a tune-up

Facts

Not all recommended car maintenance is considered a tune-up.
A tune-up focuses on keeping the engine running at the best possible efficiency.

Warming Up

Myths

Warm up your car for several minutes before driving.

Facts

Outdated advice. Driving the car is the fastest way to warm up a modern engine, and the sooner it warms up, the sooner it delivers the best mileage and performance.

Independent Repair Shops

Myths

Vehicle servicing at independent repair shops will void your warranty

Facts

Your warranty is valid until the expiration date, regardless of where you service your car. Dealerships will imply that you can only go to them, but requiring you to do so is illegal.
