Check Engine Light

When your car's check engine light illuminates your dashboard, it's usually accompanied by a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. The light could be a minor issue, such as a faulty gas cap, or it could mean something more serious, such as a misfiring engine. In many cases, you'll visit the car dealer to repair the issue and get the light turned off.

The check engine light — formally known as the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) — is a signal from the car's engine computer that something is wrong.

Your engine diagnostic test

We may look at a number of things when we run an engine diagnostic test to help us determine what is triggering your check engine light to come on. Some of these include:

  • Oxygen sensor malfunctions
  • Loose, damaged, or missing gas cap
  • Air Flow sensor malfunctions
  • Transmission issues
  • Worn-out and/or failing engine components
  • Damaged hoses causing Vacuum leaks
  • And more

Avoid self-diagnosing; trust the auto repair experts

Your check engine light can come on for any number of reasons, and it is often an indication that something somewhere in your vehicle is not working correctly. Unfortunately, running an engine diagnostic test is the only way to discover the specific problem.
Every quality vehicle repair begins with an accurate diagnosis. USA Automotive will provide a thorough and precise engine diagnosis that pinpoints your vehicle's unseen troubles.

Why do you need to get your car inspected after experiencing a check engine light?

While your car can't talk, it communicates with you using chimes, icons, and messages. One icon you should never ignore is the orange, engine-shaped one usually found in the instrument cluster. It turns on when the car's onboard computer detects a problem.

Driving the Car

Myths

You can’t drive your car when the check engine light is on.

Facts

The general rule is if the Service Engine Soon Light is on, and the car seems to be running ok, you can drive it. However, it would help if you had it checked at your earliest convenience.

Only For the Engine

Myths

Check engine light is only for the engine.

Facts

It is a means to tell you that something is wrong. For example, maybe the engine, lighting, control model, gauge, poor fuel quality, vacuum leaks, etc

Disconnecting the Battery

Myths

Disconnect the battery, and all codes will be cleared.

Facts

Disconnecting the battery will make the light disappear for a few minutes. This does not mean the code has cleared; you will still see it after some time. This means the problem still exists.

The Car Isn’t Faulty

Myths

The check engine is on, but the car is not faulty.

Facts

The light is never on for no reason; it could be because you cannot see. It could also be you can see the codes but understand nothing. So one rule of thumb is that anytime that light goes off, know there is a problem in your car.

Low Oil Level

Myths

My check engine light is on; my oil must be low.

Facts

A low oil level condition will not set your check engine light. Instead, that light will come on if something is wrong, causing your vehicle to produce more than one and a half times more emissions than it was designed to produce.
