Transmission Repair

Car owners don’t want to hear many things from their mechanics, with a transmission repair topping the list. Even if it’s repairable, the fix will likely cost a substantial amount. One mechanical failure involving the transmission can cause an engine to shut down completely, so you must watch for the signs. You should have your vehicle inspected immediately if you think there’s a problem.

When should I have my transmission checked?

If you notice your transmission is malfunctioning, bring your car to us instantly. Transmissions that slip out of gear or fail to accelerate correctly can cause accidents. In addition, delaying service or trying to perform transmission repairs on your own is dangerous and may cause more damage.

Factors that influence the costs of replacing a transmission

The transmission of a current vehicle is not one solid piece but a jumble of several moving parts. This is the main reason fixing a vehicle’s transmission is more expensive.

Other factors that impact the overall costs of replacing a transmission include:

  • The age of the vehicle
  • The car manufacturer
  • Is the transmission manual or automatic?

These factors will influence your decision to replace or repair your transmission.

What does the transmission do?

Transmissions play a vital role in a vehicle’s ability to run by carrying the engine’s power to the drive axle by utilizing various gears, making it feasible for the engine to run at various speeds.

Signs that Your Transmission Needs Repair

  • The fluid radiates a “burned” smell
  • Unusual humming, grinding, or clunking sounds, mainly when the vehicle is in neutral
  • When trying to shift, the clutch stays engaged, causing grinding noises
  • Instead of smooth transitions when the gear changes, you’ll hear and often sense a thumping or grinding sensation
  • The transmission pops back into neutral or slips between gears while driving
  • A lag between gear changes, along with greater than standard RPMs for a gear change or speed

Manual Transmissions Get Better Mileage

Myths

Manual transmissions get better mileage than automatic ones.

Facts

While this myth may have been confirmed in the past, it’s not so much the case anymore. Inefficiencies that plagued automatic transmissions in previous years have been smoothed out and replaced with more variable speeds – perhaps giving them an advantage over manual models regarding mileage.

Heat Is Inconsequential

Myths

Heat Is Inconsequential

Facts

Perhaps the worst thing that can happen to an automatic transmission is overheating. It’s estimated that 90 percent of all transmission failures are due to excessive heat levels. So if you live in a scorching area or use your vehicle for towing, you should install an external transmission fluid cooler.

Difficult Driving Conditions

Myths

Automatic transmissions can’t handle difficult driving conditions

Facts

Like gas-guzzling, this used to be a fact; however, this has been almost wholly nullified due to advanced technologies in transmission and traction control devices.

Material In The Pan

Myths

Material in the pan means the transmission is failing.

Facts

A small amount of fine powder-like material is often found in the transmission pan. This is from normal wear and tear and does not indicate a problem.

Towing

Myths

Towing a vehicle with an automatic transmission will ruin the transmission unless the driveshaft is disconnected.

Facts

Possibly true. If the vehicle is being towed, the drive wheels (whether your vehicle is front or rear-wheel drive) should be off the ground. This way, the automatic trans is not in motion. If the transmission is not in motion, it can’t be “ruined”.
